In my free time I enjoy experimenting with the laser cutter that is open for art and design students to use. Over the past few years I have created gifts for friends and family. I have used the laser cutter to etch rasterized images into pieces of wood and then cut them using vector shapes. After they are cut, I sand them to get the images more distinct and clean the burnt edges of the wood. A clear polyurethane is used in several coats to ensure water will not damage the wood, and cork is added the back to prevent surfaces from being scratched. Various plywood from stores like Lowe's and Menards are what I typically use.
